Setting goals is one way to make progress in life. If we don't know
where we are going, how will we know when we get there? If we hope to
become a writer defining that goal isn’t rocket science: put something on the
page, rewrite, rewrite, rewrite and get it out there to readers. Most of us write with the hope we will
be published. Picturing the outcome of publishing is a great way to start and
can fuel the intention. What
writer hasn’t visualized the title, book cover, web site and even the media
tour? Still, dreaming isn’t
publishing.
Putting all of those mental images out there is a great first step
but staying in the blue-sky stage doesn’t make a book. Today, especially after reading the
previous blog post, I decided that I would get serious about my writing
goals. It’s time to visualize
completing my book. I'm going on a
diet from re-thinking the material, what
if’s, and procrastination. As
my Dad used to tell me, “Apply the seat of the pants to seat of the
chair.” As the author of our
previous blog post admonishes: You must
write.
Message sent. Message
received. Deadline set. Just a few more weeks to tweek and then I
take action to reach my goal. The
manuscript won’t be perfect but it won’t stay on the shelf forever either: less
blue sky, more hard work.
